Every Friday lunchtime we would book a table for about 10 or 12 colleagues who worked at Olivetti, just along the street – I think it was off Tottenham Court Road, called Charlotte Street. This was around 1972/73.
Each week one person was elected to be drinks monitor as there were so many bottles of wine consumed that the monitor had to stay sober and put the empty bottles down by the side of their chair so that we knew how many to be charged for.
The waiters at the time knew us pretty well and each week they had prepared our favourite dessert – Torta San Genaro – we thought especially for us but I later realised that this was a special on the menu.
When my wife and I come into town we try to book remembering old times. We were probably very noisy but we had a great time.

Well, my husband Paul and I don’t quite go back 70 years, but we did meet in 1969, so 55 years ago! We used to meet in the Goodge Street area after work, exploring hostelries and restaurants. We quickly discovered the Goodge Street Spaghetti House and it became our favourite destination. Paul asked me to marry him several times, and my reply was always that I wasn’t ready. In November 1970, I decided I was ready and we went to Spaghetti House for our usual date. I waited for him to ask me again to marry him, but he didn’t . So I asked him! Fortunately he said yes, and we married in 1972. 52 years later we are still going strong, and so are you!

“Salve”
I looked up your website today, because I will be staying in London for a few days in October with some friends and think it would be lovely to revisit fond memories.
In 1973 we were all new student nurses at the Middlesex Hospital, now sadly no more. We had tiny rooms at John Astor House in Foley St and in the beginning lived on just £40/month.
Back then student nurses were not super numerary….. we did everything, from boiling eggs for patients’ breakfasts to meds and dressings. At 18 and straight out of school, in a city with so many new people and experiences, it was a challenge!
But we found the Spaghetti House nearby, in Goodge Street. A warm oasis, full of life and very reasonably priced, delicious food, which we could actually afford to treat ourselves to….. and did, regularly. I had only ever met spaghetti in tins before, so you were a revelation…. and as for profiteroles… well…. heaven!

Since I was very young in the 1960s I was taken to The Spaghetti House near Goodge Street station for Saturday lunches and celebration dinners. My sister always ordered meatballs and spaghetti and I had veal escalope with sauté potatoes. I remember having lemon sorbet or Italian trifle for dessert. I expect my parents ordered a variety of dishes. We loved the food and the waiter who entertained us by making a rabbit out of one of the white linen napkins.
This continued throughout our childhood and into our adult years. My own children were taken from babyhood and we still frequent various branches for pre theatre meals. I was disappointed when the menu reduced and out old favourites were no longer available. They are sadly missed. However, we still visit and enjoy the food and buzzy atmosphere.
The Spaghetti House is, and always has been, part of my life.
