As a long-term Londoner, I am sure I am not alone in having favourite haunts. Those city places that make you feel you are at home.

Spaghetti House restaurants have been around for all of my life……and I'm not that young but for some reason, I have never been to one before. Having now turned vegan and finding myself in the West End, shopping nearby, it seemed the best solution for a quick lunch……as everywhere else seemed hopeless for Vegan food…...and it turned out to be quite a surprise.

Nik ventures where the pretentious food bloggers dare not - a chain restaurant! Here at Spaghetti House, hidden away beneath the mountain of dishes on offer, he finds a tasty crab special, big enough to fill a man for lunch and for the rest of the day.

As an 18-year old backpacker in Thailand, I had the pleasure of watching my breakfast being caught for me on Bophut, a small fishing island off Koh Samui; the chef/fisherman speared his catch and then walked it up to the restaurant and slapped it on the grill all in the time that it took me to count how many 50-cent beers I’d had last night and how much of a dent that this had put in my travelling funds.

In 1955 two friends, Simone Lavarini and Lorenzo Fraquelli, opened the first Spaghetti House in London’s Goodge Street. After 60 years it still delivering the key elements of its success – quality wine and ingredients, homemade pasta and sauces, the freshness and natural flavours of Italian food and a warm, friendly welcome.

It had to be, I was 60 this year. So (later in the year) will the Spaghetti House group. It was the delight of Mafalda, my Italian mother-in-law, when she went out to dinner with the family in the 1950s and 1960s. It was the first restaurant that my husband took me to in the 1970s. Three decades of us and the Spaghetti House.

Pasta at 60p, pasta dishes recreated, competitions and more…it’s all happening this September.
Celebrating 60 years of love for pasta and all things Italian, Spaghetti House marks its 60th birthday this September with some very special treats. On 6 September, the day the first Spaghetti House on Goodge Street opened its doors, prices go back to those of 1955 for one day only, when two iconic pasta dishes, Spaghetti Bolognese and Spaghetti Pomodoro will be offered to guests at 60 pence for a full portion.

When you hear ‘Spaghetti House’ you will be forgiven if your mind conjures up images of bowls and bowls of spaghetti. You’d also be very wrong.

While I’m not quite old enough to have been around when Spaghetti House in Goodge Street first opened in 1955, to my generation foods like pizza and spaghetti (the long sort rather than the stuff that came in cans from Heinz) were exotic and in much the same league as nduja or burrata today.

One of the best things about restaurants in London is how so many of them now feature and promote seasonal British Produce. We have some great local ingredients and food producers in the UK and it is nice to see them served in restaurants.

Londra – Luisa Welch, responsabile delle pubbliche relazioni di Spaghetti House, mi disse: “Riccardo, ti invito per una cenetta particolare al nostro ristorante di Goodge Street”.

On a night I decided to go on a little health kick to shed a few pounds, going to Spaghetti House was probably not a wise decision but the visit had been planned weeks ahead and their menu, much like our delightful waiter, Francesco, was too hard to resist.

There is a comfortable familiarity about a Spaghetti House restaurant. I used to visit them quite regularly years ago but just fell out of the habit. They were always reliable, quick and authentic, a perfect place to catch up with friends to grab a quick bite before or after the cinema. Well now I have had my own family for some time and to my shame I haven’t taken them to a Spaghetti House. Not until now that is.

Spaghetti House has been successful for the past 60 years and is going from strength to strength. This kind of longevity in the restaurant business is rare enough to be mentioned. From that day in 1955 when two Italian friends decided to invest into bringing Italian Cuisine to London, which in these days was a risky bet, till now, Spaghetti House has provided generations of Londoners with Italy's finest culinary traditions.

When I was a little girl and my parents brought my brothers and I to London for a shopping trip, our treat for being good was lunch at the Spaghetti House. Still going strong, this family business continues to serve excellent Italian food at family-friendly price

Last month I attended the opening of a completely refurbished Spaghetti House in London’s Goodge Street where in 1955 this iconic Spaghetti House opened its doors to Londoners. The first restaurant was in fact in Golders Green in 1954, but it is Goodge Street where the story really begins. It was a star-studded evening with the likes of Ken Hom and Francesco Mazzei lending their support.

That old saying if it ain't broke don't fix it come to mind when I think of Spaghetti House. They have been trading since 1955 and it wasn't until last week that I went to one. They have stuck to the same formula since opening in 1955 indeed there are still a couple of things that are still on the menu from that date.
